Sinistar (revision 3)

0.24 [Marc LaFontaine, Steven Hugg]

- The first time you run the game, it will say 'factory settings restored'. Press F2 to proceed.

- Press F2 for Test-Mode

- Press F1 + F2 for Bookkeeping/Setup

- Rows of zeroes appear on the title screen. There were two Sinistar machines at California Extreme, both in perfect working order. One machine displayed a bunch of periods in the same way as all those 0's in MAME, and the other had an actual message displayed there. If you go into diagnostics (hit F2 - Advance) and go through all the tests, you'll end up at the game adjustments screen. Move to the bottom of the list and hit Button 1 (Fire) to select "Yes" for "Set Operator Message". Then hold down the Fire button and hit Advance again, and you'll be taken to the screen where you can set the operator message. Once you're through this screen, the 0's on the title screen will go away. =) However, I noticed one different problem: Once you're out of diagnostics mode AND YOU'VE TOLD IT TO UPDATE THE OPERATOR MESSAGE, it's impossible to play the game! The ship stays in one place and orientation on the screen, rocks appear but don't move on the screen, same thing with any enemy ships that might appear. Firing causes your shots to be displayed OVER the ship. The ship and your shots do not interact with anything on the radar, and some of the radar blips are also stuck. When the Sinistar comes alive, it taunts you and you can see its blip on the radar, but it never appears in the main game area and it can never attack you. The only way out of this is to exit and restart the game. It seems that telling it to adjust the op message causes the game to corrupt something in memory. In order to make any adjustments to the message at all, you HAVE to hold down the Fire button. I don't believe this is how it was meant to work on the real machine (see snapshots). Another update: Removing zeros can work well but you need to press F1+F2 not just F2. If you do that with f2 only, game doesn't work well.

- Sinistar opening music is missing. Start up a game of Sinistar and there's no 'music'. There are sound effects though. This is right when you first beginning playing, just before the action. The status screen which shows you the number of bombs you have and the number of pieces Sinistar has obtained. There should be a quick 'melody' - It's missing. sinistar099u2gre Trebor

- 0.95u3: Changed cpu1 roms addresses from $0-8000 to $10000-18000.

- 0.92: Highwayman added proms ($0, $200 - video inversion for cocktail table).

- 0.36b7: Aaron Giles rewritten the HC55516 CVSD decoder. This affects Sinistar, Joust 2, Arch Rivals, Pigskin, Tri-Sports, Smash TV, Trog and Narc.

- 0.35b2: Alex Pasadyn emulated speech in Sinistar. Samples are no longer used. Larry Bank and Alex Pasadyn do the CVSD emulation, used for speech in Sinistar and in the 34010 games (Smash TV etc.). Added HC55516 sound, 4x cpu2 speech roms and removed samples.

- 0.35b1: Nicola Salmoria added analog joystick support in Sinistar and Blaster.

- 0.34b8: Howie Cohen added clone Sinistar (revision 2). Renamed (oldsin) to (sinista1).

- 0.33b5: Brian Deuel added clone Sinistar (prototype version). Allegedly from a prototype machine that was displayed at the 1982 AMOA show in Las Vegas.

- 0.31: Howie Cohen added speech in Sinistar, through samples. Aaron Giles and Brad Oliver improved the blitter for the Williams games. Sinistar now works correctly.

- 0.30: Sean Riddle and Pat Lawrence improved the blitter for Sinistar, but there are still some problems.

- 0.29: Sean Riddle and Pat Lawrence improved the blitter for Sinistar, but there are still some problems. Marc Lafontaine made several fixes to the Williams driver: Sinistar is playable but there are some blitter bugs.

- 0.24: Added Sinistar (Williams 1982) - not playable yet. Marc LaFontaine provided drivers for Robotron, Splat, Defender, Joust, Stargate, Bubbles, Blaster and Sinistar. Bubbles doesn't start, and Sinistar do weird things at startup. The other games work very well, though. For this version I provide a set of fonts that can be used to avoid jerkiness in williams games.

- Blast crystals off planetoids. Pick up crystals to fill bombbay with sinibombs.

- Firing does not affect the mighty SINISTAR. Only sinibombs can affect this nemesis.

- Once the SINISTAR is built you must destroy or you had better run.
